Ibiza Vinyl-Only Listening Bar Opens

Launching this past weekend as part of beach restaurant El Silencio, Urusai Sunset Bar claims to be the White Isle’s first audiophile bar, inspired by Japanese jazz kissa culture. The venue is curated by Jaime Fiorito, son of late Balearic pioneer DJ Alfredo, and fitted with a custom HiFi soundsystem and a hybrid analog-digital mixer for its exclusively vinyl programming.

Urusai’s music and food offerings intend to blend the Japanese jazz kissa tradition with Ibiza’s local flavour by hosting eclectic jazz, disco, soul and Spanish genre-highlighting selectors and a Izakaya run by chefs Taku Yuji Mikurya and Romain Littière. In addition to Fiorito stepping up behind the decks, the listening bar has invited Jazz N Palms, Ryan O Gorman, Luca Averna, DJ Pippi and more to play in the coming weeks.

A new documentary series on the history of Japanese listening bars premieres in the UK at Sheffield DocFest this week.

“Father of the Balearic beat” DJ Alfredo passed away at age 71 this past December. Learn more about his life, career and impact here.

Last summer, Ria Hylton visited some key audiophile spots in London and Amsterdam to see how they highlight and differ from Japanese jazz kissa.
